Botswana is a peaceful and democratic country that is nearly the size of Texas, but with only 1.7 million residents. The vast game reserves in the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert are remote and very sparsely populated, home to isolated tented camps and a truly pristine environment.

Botswana safaris may feature the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, a 53,800-square-kilometer game sanctuary that ranks second in the world in size; the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, widely known as the "predator capital" of Africa with its leopards, cheetahs, African wild dogs and lions; or Chobe National Park, where the elephant population is estimated to be 60,000.

On Botswana safaris, you might view wildlife from dugout canoes called mokoros, motorboats, four-wheel-drive vehicles, or on foot. There will also be opportunities for shopping. Botswana is the world's largest producer of gem-quality diamonds, and the country has a long tradition of basket-making.

Botswana safaris are available year-round, although the best game-viewing periods are during the dry season in winter (May through August) and the springtime months of September and October. It is then that animal populations are concentrated at rivers, pools and other water sources. The best months for bird-viewing are November to March.
