Botswana Safaris

Botswana safaris may feature the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, a 53,800-square-kilometer game sanctuary that ranks second in the world in size; the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, widely known as the "predator capital" of Africa with its leopards, cheetahs, African wild dogs and lions; or Chobe National Park, where the elephant population is estimated to be 60,000. For an unforgettable experience, take in a gorgeous sunset over the remote Makgadikgadi saltpans -- shallow basins containing salt deposits from an evaporated lake. Once one of Africa's largest inland lakes, the area welcomes herds of antelope, zebra and wildebeest with the first rains and radiates a surreal shimmer during the hotter months.

On Botswana safaris, you might view wildlife from dugout canoes called mokoros, motorboats, four-wheel-drive vehicles, or on foot. There will also be opportunities for shopping. Botswana is the world's largest producer of gem-quality diamonds, and the country has a long tradition of basket-making.

Botswana safaris are available year-round, although the best game-viewing periods are during the dry season in winter (May through August) and the springtime months of September and October.
